PGA Might Move SFB Classic and Site Update

The AP is reporting that PGA Tour officials are looking at options for what to do about the Southern Farm Bureau Classic in Mississippi. The tournament is scheduled to take place Oct. 6 - 9 at the Annandale Golf Club.

The Mississippi golf course was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina.

``They have over 1,000 trees down on the golf course,'' Henry Hughes, director of operations for the PGA Tour, said Tuesday. ``They had disease in some of the greens, and they were going to re-sod four greens, which is obviously delayed now.''

Even if the course can be brought back up to playable conditions, because of the destruction and need for shelters there really is no where for people to stay.

Hilton Head Island Celebrity Golf Tournament

April's MCI Heritage Classic is not the only big golf event on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Over Labor Day weekend, Hilton Head will play host to the 25th Anniversary of the Hilton Head Celebrity Golf Tournament.

The tournament takes place September 2, 3, and 4 at three different Hilton Head golf courses.

Amateur golfers are matched with a different celebrity each day and will have the opportunity to tee it up at The Golf Club at Indigo Run, The Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes and Harbour Towne Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort.

Some of the celebrities scheduled to play include: Bob Cousy, Johnny Bench, Gale Sayers, Ozzie Smith, Richard Roundtree, Ed Marinaro and many more.

Ocean Isle Beach Golf Club - Closes For redevelopment

Another Myrtle Beach area golf course has closed its doors. On Monday August 15th the Ocean Isle Beach Golf Club closed for golf and according to sources will become a new housing development in the near future.

Could this begin a new trend in the Myrtle Beach golf community?

Since 1999 eight golf courses have closed in the Grand Strand area. Both Calabash Golf Links and the Belle Terre Golf Course will also close soon. Other courses not closing entirely, but closing holes and redeveloping the land.

Why is this happening?

Many courses are seeing a drop in profits because of the oversaturation of golf courses in the Myrtle Beach area.

Also, the housing boom and real estate market offer golf course owners a way to make a lot of money by selling to developers.

Golfers shouldn't worry too much. Myrtle Beach golf still offers plenty of great courses and because of the competition you will still find great rates up and down the Grand Strand.

Golf Fitness - A Short Rant

I promise not to rant as much as I want regarding the growing number of "golf fitness" programs, gimmicks and equipment bombarding our market.

Surely, you would become bored.

As a former trainer of golfers and now a part-time golf improvement consultant, I just can't get over all the junk that is hitting the golf fitness market.

It really reminds me of the diet industry. People see an opportunity to make a lot of money and really don't care if their programs work.

There is always an out. If it doesn't work, blame it on the consumer. They didn't follow the program correctly or "not all promised results are typical".

In the past month, I have received multiple press releases from companies regarding their golf fitness programs.

The one that caused me to write this entry - the so-called straw that broke the camel's back - promised fitness club owners a turn-key program that will give consumers "quick and measurable results" and bring the clubs a lot of new revenue.

Sound familiar?

Diets promise quick results and make the businesses loads of money.

The fact of the matter is that most golf fitness programs can increase your yardage on drives. But, in turn, you also ruin your ability to reproduce a consistent, accurate, golf shots. You also change your body in a way that invites injury.

They focus on "quick and easy","one-size-fits all", "core training", and bodybuilding techniques that just don't translate to the complexities of the golf swing.

In fact, some programs are built around expensive machines and really the whole purpose is to sell the machines to fitness club owners not to improve your golf game.

One of my clients was amazed when I improved their yardage on all shots - drives by more than 20-30 yards - while drastically improving his accuracy on all shots including putting by only using stretching techniques, a stability ball, and a dowel rod (a stick) that I bought at Lowes.

To wrap this up, remember that if it is promised to be quick and easy and uses only certain equipment along with no individual assessment - you should really just walk away.

I really fear that the onslaught of "miracle tonic" golf fitness scams and scammers is only going to increase from this point forward.

Don't fall for it. Demand better.

Myrtle Beach Golf Courses Report Slumping Spring

According to the Alan Blondin of Myrtle Beach's Sun News, "The Grand Strand couldn't match its record number of paid rounds played in the spring of 2004, but still recorded a relatively successful spring in 2005."

Myrtle Beach golf course owners shouldn't worry about these slumping numbers too much. This spring's numbers were still the fourth best besides 2004, 2000 and 1997.

What is a down year in the Myrtle Beach golf market?

In the months of March, April and May, golfers played 1.36 million played rounds of Grand Strand golf.

Here's a tip to remember for next spring in Myrtle Beach. It seems that the last three weeks of May continue to show a decline in rounds of golf played. If this continues, Myrtle Beach golf courses and Myrtle Beach golf package providers might begin to offer deeper discounts and incentives to bring golfers back to the Grand Strand.

Keep in mind that these weeks usually host a couple of "bike weeks" and you will have to deal with a few traffic issues. Other than that, it sounds like the golf courses in Myrtle Beach are a little less crowded.

The Kaanapali Golf Course - North Course is the first 18-hole course constructed on Maui. The Tournament North Course, opened its lush fairways in 1962 and is one of only two Hawaii golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.

Arnold Palmer called the 449-yard par-4 18th at this Maui golf course one of the best and most challenging finishing holes he'd ever played.

Callaway - To Sell or Not To Sell

Callaway Golf Co. might have new ownership according to the company in a statement released Thursday.

There have been rumors of a purchase along with an increase in stock prices in the past few months.

Now it looks like the rumors are true.

According to a release from the AP and Ronald Beard the lead independent director, "We feel that this is an opportune time to explore a full range of strategic alternatives that could enhance shareholder value."

Callaway reps also state that it has, "has received unsolicited indications of interest from various parties from time to time" and "no firm offers have been made, no substantive discussions are currently under way, and neither the board nor the senior management team has reached any decisions regarding the preferred strategic direction for the company."

One thing is for sure. Callaway Golf is searching for a new CEO to help right the ship after this past year's bad business mistakes.

New Greens for Myrtle Beach Golf Courses

Golfers coming to Myrtle Beach late summer and early fall will get a chance to play brand new greens at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and Long Bay Club.

Both golf courses are closed now through late August for renovations. These renovations include changing the greens over to ultradwarf Champions Bermudagrass.

This type of grass is more shade tolerant, heals quickly, is dormant in the winter and has to be overseeded.

When Caledonia reopens, golfers will also notice upgrades to the cart paths and bag drops.

Long Bay will also make improvements to its bunkers and irrigation systems.

Nick Price Design Opens in Myrtle Beach

The new course, designed by Nick Price and Craig Schreiner, and the first-class 27,000 square-foot clubhouse opened on June 4th.

Just read an entertaining article about the booming luxury residential high-rise condo market in Las Vegas.

It seems Ivana Trump, Donald's ex, is putting her name on what was once The Summit Las Vegas. This luxury condo building will now be called The Ivana.

Here's what's got to really get under Donald Trump's skin. The Ivana is the tallest residential condo building in Las Vegas standing 73 stories high.

On the other hand, Donald Trump's new Las Vegas project, Trump International Hotel and Tower, will only stand 64 stories high.

Wonder if the Vegas line-setters have set an over/under on how soon Donald Trump makes a change to his building's design. We wouldn't put it past him to add 10 more stories to his new project.

I just read a recent story on MSNBC. The article listed both Charleston, SC and Hilton Head, SC as two of the top 10 Memorial Day getaways.

What a coincidence. We are just in the process of adding these locations to PerfectGolfVacations.com.

While we are on the subject of new additions. I just wanted to let you know about a few things going on here at PerfectGolfVacations.com.

New Golf Instruction Aid Added at Martins

Martins PGA Tour Superstore recently added a second computerized swing simulator to the Swing Lab sections of its two Myrtle Beach locations. Martin’s on-staff PGA and LPGA professionals use the simulators to analyze a golfer’s swing, assist with club fitting and to assist in golf instruction.

According to Steve Conwell vice president of merchandising of Golf & Tennis Pro Shop, Inc., the owners of Martin's PGA TOUR Superstore, "The services provided by the Swing Lab are so popular that we needed to add another bay to handle all the demand for club fitting and instruction."

New Television Show for Golfers Debuts

Resort Sports Television debuts a new golf show beginning May 30 and running through Oct. 30 in mountain and beach resorts across the United States.

“The Clubhouse” will feature interviews, new technology features, course reviews, and other golf-related programming. “Our mission is to provide uncluttered, relevant local programming to help viewers in our resort markets make the most of their vacation experience,” said Richard Bilodeau, vice president of marketing for the television network.

Wynn Las Vegas is Born and Las Vegas Celebrates Big One

Wynn Las Vegas is up and running. The new casino hotel opened its doors April 28th. We've seen a few comments here and there.

According to what we have read, Wynn's newest creation tops the Venetian, Bellagio and Ceasar's Palace in almost every facet. Another reviewer reported that the Venetian and Bellagio almost seem dated by the Wynn Las Vegas standards.

As soon as we read about the most important part of Wynn Las Vegas - the golf course - we will let you know.

FYI - The city of Las Vegas will celebrate its 100th birthday May 15.

Anyone planning any Caribbean or Canadian golf vacations in the future? Expect to be asked for your passport.

In the past, you could enter and return from many countries with a driver's license and birth certificate. Not for long.

At the end of December, you will be required to travel with a passport when visiting Bermuda, Panama, the Caribbean, Canada, or Mexico. Full integration of the new system will begin by the end of 2007.

Myrtle Beach Golf Courses Win Awards

Grande Dunes golf course and Tidewater Golf Club both received mentions as "Top 50 Courses in South Carolina" in the April edition of South Carolina magazine. Both courses are owned and operated by local Grand Strand company Burroughs & Chapin.

“We feel a sense of pride to be named one of the top courses in our state,” said Burroughs & Chapin’s director of golf operations Archie Lemon. “It’s an honor to be categorized with other great courses like Harbour Town Golf Links and Kiawah Island Resort-Ocean Course.”

Besides the overall ranking, Grande Dunes was rated the #6 golf course in Myrtle Beach. Tidewater secured the #4 position out of the top 20 golf courses in the Grand Strand.

Golf Club Thefts Rising

I read an interesting article on USA Today's website yesterday. The brief article deals with the growing problem facing all golfers. That problem is the rise of golf club theft across the country.

Here's an alarming quote from USA Today.

"Golf club thefts are likely to eclipse $200 million this year, according to Don Stafford of Insurer's World Evaluation Services. That's about 10% of the $2 billion spent annually to buy new clubs, according to Golf Datatech."

According to the insurance industry, overall thefts are on the decline. However, golf club thefts are going against this trend. In fact, six out of ten golfers say they have been a victim or know someone who has.

Thieves salivate over today's high-tech, high-priced clubs. With the ease of selling stolen goods on Ebay and other online auctions, these thieves have no problem unloading hot golf equipment.

A Las Vegas Golf Course to Avoid?

The word is spreading in the Las Vegas golf world to avoid Stallion Mountain Country Club. The course is getting bad reviews in the golf press and with golfers. To be fair, we have not seen the course ourselves lately and there are a few golfers who still stand up for Stallion Mountain.

Here's what a few golfers had to say about Stallion Mountain's conditions. One golfer described the course as having dirt patches everywhere. Another described sandtraps as cement bowls covered with cat litter. The golf course was also said to have muddy fairways and rock hard greens.

Another golf publication has published pictures of these horrible conditions to back up what golfers are saying.

The course itself and many of the local casinos are still reccomending Stallion Mountain Country Club. Neither is reporting major complaints. A local golfer also stated that he thought the course, while not in perfect condition, was not as bad as its reputation.

Our advice to vacationing travelers is to avoid Stallion Mountain until the dust clears. There are many good golf courses in Las Vegas. You can find most listed on our Las Vegas golf course directory page. Unlike the craps table, you don't have to take a chance to play a winner.

And we thought Vegas hotels were on the expensive side...this hotel takes the cake. The Emirates Palace in Abuhabi has less than 400 rooms. It is not size but cost that makes this the most expensive hotel ever built. The hotel features imported marble and acres - 60 acres - of interior space. The staff eagerly awaits their new golf carts for navigating their surroundings.

The Million Dollar Dud

When is a million-dollar shootout not a million-dollar shootout? Seems like the courts will have to decide this one. Or, will they?

A lawsuit that was brought against the Las Vegas $3 Million Dollar Shootout didn't derail the alleged knock-off. Instead, the Arizona-based organizers pulled the plug on the event scheduled May 4-8.

Organizers of the Las Vegas Million Dollar Shootout were seeking a court injunction against the tournament. They felt organizers stole their name, location, and concept and wanted the courts to step in and stop the tournament.

Now the Las Vegas Million Dollar Shootout to be held May 17-20 on Pauite's Wolf course no longer has the competition and is inviting those who had already signed up for the earlier tournament to join theirs.

Speculation in the Las Vegas golf scene is that the tournament didn't have the golfers to support the copycat tournament. The reason for canceling now was to fend off embarassment and to keep sponsors from feeling like organizers could not bring in the golfers to support the tournament.

Las Vegas Airport Alternatives - Site Update

Golfers flying into Las Vegas for a golf vacation in private, charter, or corporate aircraft have options other than the McCarran International Airport.

There are five general aviation facilities in the Las Vegas area. Two of these are full-service facilities only minutes away from the "Strip". These airports offer shuttle, taxi, limo, and auto rental services to get you to the golf course or gaming tables. They also offer pilot's lounges and meeting space.

Not all of these airports are full-service. A couple offer no amenities and one does not even have a lighted runway.

Quick news of note regarding a few Brunswick county golf courses. Brunswick county is on the north end of what most consider the Myrtle Beach / Grand Strand golf area. It is just across the border in North Carolina. Great place to visit and great golf courses. We included this area in our Myrtle Beach section.

According to the Brunswick Beacon, "Brunswick County is home to 10 of the top 100 golf courses in the state and 4 of the top 10 in the coastal region..." Some courses of note in the listings are Tiger's Eye, Sea Trail Maples and Jones, and Thistle.

Brunswick county is full of great golf courses and has great beaches. Nest time you plan a golf trip to Myrtle Beach, don't leave out Brunswick county courses.

Playing golf during the summer months has its positives and negatives. Here in the South, the heat and humidity can be brutal during the summer. Of course, rates for green fees fall as much as the temperatures rise.

Help is on the way. A new "Cold Air Anywhere" air-conditioning unit made its debut at the 2004 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida. The unit runs on batteries and forces cold air - up to 30 degree difference - directly where you want it.

This is not a "swamp cooler" that uses ice. The unit can attach to many vehicles including golf carts and uses nothing more than an automobile battery to keep you cool for 18 holes.

Soon golfers will be able to beat high prices and high temperatures. We can't wait for this new product to hit the cart paths at destinations like Myrtle Beach and Las Vegas.

Is Tiger Back?

Tiger Woods roared from behind to win Sunday's Masters. He reclaimed the world's #1 ranking. Of course, he also holed an amazing chip for a birdie on #16 in the last round.

Is Tiger really back? After he hit the amazing chip, he went on to bogey the final two holes. He almost gave this great Masters victory away with a lack of mental focus on 17 and 18.

This lack of focus never crept into his previous wins. When Tiger was so hot, he not only won, he buried his opponents. His mental focus never wavered like it did yesterday.

Chris DiMarco was a big part of Tiger not running away with the final day. However, DiMarco's strong play had nothing to do with Tiger almost blowing the victory on the final two holes.

I'm happy for Tiger. I enjoy watching him play. In a way, I'm glad he kept things interesting for us.

Will he come back and dominate like he did before? We'll have to wait and see.

Even more than congratulating him on a great victory, I'd like to send his family and father good thoughts. We hope Tiger's dad will be there the next time he walks off of 18 victorious.

Congrats Tiger and Chris DiMarco and thanks for an enjoyable and thrilling, Sunday at Augusta.

Have you heard about...

...Steve Wynn's new Las Vegas casino opening April 28th? This place looks amazing. Steve Wynn's creations usually are first-class all the way and this will be no different.

The new hotel is located on the Strip near the Venetian and Harrah's. The name- Wynn Las Vegas. This new creation looks to be more upscale and luxuries than the Bellagio.

The best thing about the new property - a new golf course. Visitors to the website are introduced to the golf section with this quote, "If our course were any closer, you'd be sleeping on the greens."

Sounds nice. Roll out of bed, grab breakfast at one of the 18 restaurants, stroll by the newly created lake and mountain, then head over to the first tee. What's nicer is that this course will be exclusive to guests only.

Can't wait to get out and try the new course and hotel pools very soon. We'll keep you posted about any new news or opinions regarding the new Wynn Las Vegas and more importantly the new golf course.

Golfapalooza and other Myrtle Beach Golf Happenings

April is a big month in the Myrtle Beach Golf community.

Golfers can still volunteer for the April 11th "Monday After the Masters Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Tournament". The event is capped off with a sold-out concert event featuring Hootie and the Blowfish and friends. This event is always a good time.

Golfapalooza hits the Grand Strand April 14th - 16th. Golfers can get a glimpse at the newest equipment technology while enjoying good food and music. It is just a great overall event. We'll have more on this event soon in the Myrtle Beach section of our site.

Site Update - Las Vegas Golf School Page

Good morning everyone. Just wanted to let you know we added a new listing on our Las Vegas Golf Schools page.

Troon Signature Golf Schools are held at The Revere Golf Club in Henderson. The course won the "Best of 2003" award in Nevada Magazine.

Students can choose from 2-day, 3-day, and 5-day golf schools. Accommodations, lunches and course play are included. Make sure to contact Chris Eastman, Director of golf instruction for more information.
